Default 1st Repair-Power Steering Pump

My son was driving his 1999 DII when the 3 Amigos came on and the temp gauge began climbing. Fortunately he had the presence of mind to pull over (advice he learned from this forum). The Power Steering Pump shaft had started to come out of the pump and the serpentine belt had come off. Nothing else looks damaged.

I have the RAVE CD and the repair looks straight forward. Remove the ACE pump and the AC compressor then the Power Steering Pump. I am looking at the Rover Connections Land Rover remanufactured pump for around two hundred dollars.

For the fluids I know I need synthetic oil and Lucas condition. Is there a way to flush fresh fluid through the steering box and lines before I hook up the replacement pump? Not sure if the damaged pump discharged metal debris into the steering system. Any other factors I need to take into consideration while doing this job? Once the truck is running again all I will take better care in renewing all the fluids.

Thanks for you input and Be Safe, Mark V.

Not really, I have found the easiest thing to do is change your pump, consider changing the hoses at the same time cause at your mileage they are going to start leaking if they havent already.
Fill the reseror, let it run so all the air will get out, turning the wheel frequently, once all the air is all out then suck out all the fluid again adding only 1/2 bottle of Lucas if you are in a cold area.

Hoses really are not that expensive if you have it all apart anyway. I neglected a small leak for a long time.

Here is a note and something I neverconsidered:

Mypower steering fluid was dripping down onto the panhard rod. The result was a panhard rod bushing premature failure. This is not a safe condition, and combined with a bad wheel bearing resulted in the "death shakes". Not very fun, and I initially thought I had a bad throw-out bearing or tranny! PHEW. Still not much fun getting that bushing out...

Hoses are cheap..even cheaper than I!
