Default RE: 2000 DII Brake Job

Remember to let the brakes break in slowly, no panic stops for a couple of days.

Just finished doing my front brakes/rotors. I used OEM Land Rover rotors and pads. My question has to do with the first couple of stops after everything is installed. The rotors/pads made a horrible grinding noise and was very slow to stop. After doing controlled stop about 5-6 times, it got much better. I'm assuming this is because the pads were wearing off the black coating on the rotor? Is this the right way to do it, or should I have used sandpaper, a wire brush or something to prep the rotor first? I did spray the rotors with brake cleaner before installing, but that didn't appear to help.

Thanks!

A lot of the rotors have a coating over them to help prevent rust and corrosion while they sit on the shelf. It is better to clean them before putting them on the vehicle, but I think most people just let the pads wear it down. If you do clean them, you can use break cleaner to get the oil off.
