Just remember all Rovers have a 7 year, 70,000 or 80,000 mile emission warranty on cats.
Can you say "FREE"????

He's quoting $1500 (approx.) for parts ($1000) and labor. I'm assuming his part supplier is quoting him for the whole Y pipe.

the highest price i can find online for the part is $730 (includes shipping) from british atlantic. other sites have it for under $500 (not including shipping).

Questions:
1. is this a reasonable quote from the shop? I've found this shop to be pretty honest (though they might be 'playin' me') in my past dealings.

2. if i get the part myself, is this a repair i could do myself in my driveway?

thanks for the help.

Matt

you van get cats like mike said for $80.00 installed...dont buy into that have to have LR parts...that is unless you like holding your ankels....You an but the hole y assembly for under $500.00 and do it your self..... I go for the $160.00 and take $340.00 and go somewhere for the weekend and enjoy yourself...

$1,500.00 is about a third of what your trucks worth...

That is the problem with tagging onto old posts, people skip you..

You can get the $80 cats installed and be just fine. I would do both at the same time. I got 2 high flow cats from Magnaflow installed for $275. They have a list of approved dealers on their website... Unless you are in CA>

Bad News:

FYI - in my case it ended up that it wasn't the cats at all. I had the broken weld on the heat shield that cause the rattle when the mechanic crawled under the car and banged on it to show me the issue. that ended up being a $20 weld at the muffler show (Muffler Man in Dorchester, MA - honest guys).

However the actual problem with my disco was a worn "propeller shaft". I had it repaired at Boston Roverland in South Boston, MA (great rover repair shop. Highly recommended - http://www.bostonroverland.com)

Moral of this story is I definitely recommend getting a second opinion.

Matt

Matt, not sure what year yours is, but I will bet you have a D2. You got lucky the shaft didn't fail. Not as much of a problem on a D1. But yeah, good point on second opinions.
