2000 Land-Rover Discovery II TD5, weird engine behaviour.
If the TD5 has injectors that just open up via pressure then
there is nothing complex.
Check that the steel hoses to the injectors are tight.
Find your dieselpumpe.
This is the pump that puts the diesel up to high pressure to squirt into the cylnder.
The diesel pump may have vacuum lines on it to regulate the pressure.
Check those.
Also - If the TD5 has a timing belt and yours is loose then that can cause the dieselpumpe to be out of time.
Or the timing belt skipped a tooth or such.
But it does sound like you have gotten a buggered tank of Diesel when you filled it up lat.

May I suggest you take the truck into a diesel engine specialist with specific knowledge of LR's. (don't use your friends unless they really know a lot about the TD5 and diesel engines)
The injectors are regulated and coded into the ECU which opens them in a timing sequence and the diesel pump is located in the fuel tank at the back which is accessible from inside the load area. The TD5 is a chain driven cam and all injector timing functions are from the engine ECU. Download the LR RAVE Manual for the TD5 engine and look through it to understand the engine workings. It is a very simple engine but controlled by (damned) electronics from various ECU's. There are many possibilities for the engine running rough from MAF sensors to injectors or even water in the diesel fuel. It's very difficult to diagnose on a forum and we will all be guessing. It could be anything from a failing fuel pump to a failing injector or to oil in the injector harness (which is under the cam cover) to an ECU going 'bonkers'. Yes a Nanocom can read the ECU and field instruments if you want to pay for it, which isn't cheap, and is unique to D2's unless you spend more for a licence for other LR trucks and similarly Hawkeye. The only certain way to diagnose is by LR's unique system at the main agents and they charge big time for that.

Bon chance. If you take the truck to an LR specialist ensure they know LR diesels particularly TD5's as they are a different 'animal' to a V8 gas engine.
