2001 D2 112k Burning Smell
Hey everyone! First post! LOVE THE FORUM!! THANK YOU!!!
I have this 01 D2 SE and I have done a tune up recently. Plugs, filter, coolant flush, oil change, etc. I did not do the plug wires YET- on order. I am also planning the valve cover gaskets and intake gasket too. I cannot do the wire job without removing the UI. I also did the CKP last night too. PITA!!!!
So- after running it for a short time, the truck begins to smell like metal burning. Some random smoke from the engine compartment, but cannot see from where. It did not do this prior to the tune up (that I noticed) so that may be a factor or coincidence. I had this truck less than 2 weeks, and it has proven to live up to the stereotype(s). Any suggestions, advice or tips are ALL welcome.
Thank you for all you do. It is truly appreciated!!

You probably have oil dripping on the exhaust pipes.
Only 1 drip every minute can make a horrible smell.
tHAT IS ONLY ONE DROP.
Other things.
If the check engine light is on
and there is raw gas going into the cat converters.
They can glow red and burn up what is near them - rubber and wires and such.,
Some of the car fires along the road are just that.
Drive with check engine light on - damn the torpedos.
People that do that.
And their car catches on fire.
Oh well.

Like metal on metal smell. Yes, there is a lot of oil from the VCG's, and I am doing those today. It SEEMED to appear after the tune up, but again it could only be when I noticed it, not the actual time it happened.
I am going to replace the gaskets and see if it persists. This forum is just awesome, and I appreciate any time people take time to help me.
I am super new to the Rover, and I am sure I will have many more posts.
Thank you.

So, before you replace the v/c gaskets, go to your local do it yourself car wash and power scrub the crap out of your engine with the cold water high pressure cycle. This may give you a mis-fire because of you old plug wires but that will go away as the wires dry.
So. It was the valve cover gaskets leaking for sure. Tightened them down- BEFORE I went all the way with replacement, and de-greased that sucker. Man it was filthy! Worked perfectly. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
But now I have another issue. I will post that later.
