Dont take it to the dealer.
Keep using premium fuel and take it to a driveline shop and have them check the driveshafts for play and wear.
If after 3-4 tanks of premium fuel the noise does not go away (assuming it is coming from the engine) then we can tackle that.
If your front driveshaft breaks you will be buying a new transmission, when the front driveshaft starts to go bad it will often make a clicking sound.

Default Front Drive Shaft?

Hello,
I am clueless, but i noticed in my bank records that in May of 2009 i had a "NEW" drive shaft replaced by a local garage. I paid $626.59 for the part and labor. I am not sure if it was for the front, but i thought it was. But i agree it does seem to be more of a clicking sound that a knock, tapping or ping.

When i take off from the stop position and immediately starting uphill it seems to be more pronounced.

Perhaps the guy who did the install did not do a very good job.

December 2009 I pressure tested cooling system. Power Steering fluid changed also on this date. ACE Pump checked and is ok. But have not changed Fluid to ACE system

In April 2010 had ECU diagnostic scan and NO fault codes and transmission fluids changed on this date.

Oil has been changed at regular intervals. NOTE: When i bought the rover it used synthetic oil. But when i moved to Maine in 2007, i was told synthetic was not necessary and the mechanic started putting 10w 30 in the vehicle. Today someone told me that you are not supposed to go from synthetic to regular oil???

Just a few more ideas to run by all of you.

Gordon

The switching from syn to dino oil is a myth.
However 10w30 is way to thin for these engines.
You need to use 5w-40, 10w-40 or 15w-40.

Can you take a quick video so we could hear the sound?

Default Record clicking sound

ello,

So i will try to do an audio recording of the sound this morning. I will record from a stop position going up a small hill.

Best, Gordon

Default Knocking AUDIO

Well i recorded the sounds with my arm well out the window. Upon playback i really couldn't hear anything, but then again my ears are crap.

Here is the recording, perhaps you can hear something other than just air noise. LOl

Best,

G

My 2003 with 85000 miles has ametallic tap or tick only after the engine is at normal temp. When it is cold no noise. It sounds all over engine.I used a stetoscope and
still cannot pin the noise down.Had the oil pressure checked. It is good.Should I tear into the engine? Help!

bobbytrue - you might consider starting a new thread. So the noise can be heard equally well all over the engine? Might be exhaust related - there have posts about that. Might try stehoscope down the exhaust pipe a short distance.
