Sounds like multiple problems at this point. You haven't listed any codes yet. You NEED a basic code reader, being the owner of an old Rover. They're not expensive. What brand crank sensor did you install? They're known to be crap if not Bosch. You're probably going to need new O2 sensors since it's been running rich for a while. That could've been the problem from the beginning; the black smoke was trying to tell you something..

I bought an iCarsoft i930, it's not terribly expensive and it'll read the Rover's ABS and SRS codes.

 

I would use a 10w40.

Your first step is going to have to be to source and stop the oil leak, and then slowly cleanup all the issues that it has caused. You can get a code reader and start replacing things, (which you do need to do), but if you don't take care of the oil problem first they'll just reappear.

So you lost 5 or 6 quarts of oil just driving around? This sounds ominous, but you need to make a very good inspection of the motor. Get under it with a flashlight fer looking at the RAVE diagram.

 

That oil consumption is crazy! Did this problem just start? Where all the plugs you replaced black with soot or just a few? The only thing I can think of that woudl dis-appear that much oil that fast would be a hole in the piston where the intake stroke could suck the oil out of the crankcase, and I still do not think it would use it that fast.

If you want to be cheap, you can rent/borrow a fuel pressure tester, compression tester, and get the auto parts store to read your codes. You might want to try disconnecting the oxygen sensors and the MAF sensor, the system will default to rpm/tps map and might a little richer but will likely be a little smoother.
