It only has 88k miles and is a 1 owner vehicle with pretty solid maintenence records. He's asking 4800 but im pretty sure i could drive away for 4500. And if i just need to replace the lifters and cam, id ****** it up tomorrow because it is head and shoulders above anythig else ive seen, but if it is a sleeve or a pushrod or any of the other numerous possibilities...id be screwed. Seems like the general concensus is keep looking? And thanksso much again guys for all your input, ive been so excited to get my hands on a disco and im reaaalllly trying to make sure i get the right one
If you really like it, see if they'll let you take it to a Mechanic and have the oil pressure tested and see what your operation temps are and give the oil change option I spoke of a try. If the tick goes away with the heavy oil you've probably got some bad lifters. If its got low oil pressure your looking at new bearings on top of the Valve Train work at a min. Are you able to do engine work yourself? If so tell the owner what we are talking about and see if you can take it off his hands for $3000K given the work you'll need to do.

0304disco - great advice, i'll have my mechanic do both of those things. I got the guy to agree to drive it out to my mechanic tomorrow so i guess that'll be the day of reckoning. And yes im able to do almost all of my own work, and what i cant my mechanic ( who also happens to be a close friend) does it for pennies on the dollar, or lets me do it in his shop and just throws in tips and corrections when needed (an invulaue resource really)

Are there any other tests i should have him run or things i should look for in particular while i have it in the shop? Any input is immeasurably appreciate as tomorrow will either mean a potential great disco or an incredible headache in the future. Thanks again for all the help

Deep knock may be rod bearings on the crank shaft or big end bearings.
Or crankshaft bearings to the block.

rapping tick kind of knock could be a cylinder liner which is loose and that means the block - and or engine is junk.

I would avoid.

Or offer these facts and get it for $1,500. It is not worth more.

Did you ever find out what the knocking was?
