Talking Engine Tap/Knock Sound - 2004 LR Disco 2 4.6

Has anyone in this entire forum actually fixed the tapping/knocking sound on their Land Rover Disco 2??? I keep seeing a lot of complaints on this same issue but it doesn't seem that ANYONE has actually found a solution other than a complete engine overhaul (on another forum).

I changed the tappets/lifters, cleaned the push rods, and change all the gaskets on the top of the engine (not the head gasket). Still the sound is there.

Again, has ANYONE actually FIXED this issue in their LR D2???

Please let me know if you've seen a thread where someone actually had a good outcome.

Thank you!

What oil are you using?

Many find that Rotella 15w40 makes things quiet down.

Have you done an oil pressure measurement? Ever seen the oil light flicker on idle?

Low oil pressure will cause noise. Broken oil pump is a common issue on these.

Some have also found that switching to an OEM 180° thermostat, which lowers the operating temp, has helped quiet the engine down.

I did on an 03' buy putting good used rocker arm assemblies in, but now I have a rebuild that is doing it. Shell Rotella and Lucas oil additive.

Does yours sound like this?

Here is my story:

1. Switched to rotella 15w40 and Wix filter, helped some.
2. Switched to a 180 tstat, sound disappeared for awhile and came back intermittently.
3. Got an ultraguage and found I was running too hot.
4. Swapped the radiator and hoses with temps in the 188 on the highway and 200 on a hot in the summer, ticket would disappear for months and then return.
5. Head gaskets blew and replaced got a valve job and ensure everything was in spec before closing things up.

After the head gaskets and all the top end work, the engine is much quieter than its ever been and I have not heard the tick since. That was 2 months ago. Time will tell if it returns.

While the engine was apart the sleeves where checked, there was no indication of movement.
