You're nuts. 20/50 and a 170 degree inline thermostat. Drive it till it explodes.

That's funny, that's what my wife said (minus the 170 thermo and the oil). Where can I find a 170? I put a 180 on it last year.

With the inline thermostat mod you can use almost any 54mm Chevy thermostat. The chain parts stores here have them down to 160 degrees.

Here's the thread on how to do it: https://landroverforums.com/forum/discovery-ii-18/d2-inline-thermostat-mod-32216/

You should shop around,

A good LR indy should be charging around 2k for HG's and similar for cam/lifters. With labor you should be around $4k, not 6. And thats paying full labor costs. Do some of the work yourself and cut the cost from there.

The cam shaft itself if a few hundred, lifters under $100, might as well do oil pump and timing chain if that has not already been done. HG parts are under $400.

All the rest is labor.

If your engine was decent before needing HG's and cam/lifters it should be restoreable.

Default hard numbers

I'm doing what I suggested (and what is suggested above) right now with a 4.6 I took off a parts truck I bought. It had a bad head gasket. I decided to have the engine totally redone.

HG kit is 140
Head bolts 75
Camshaft -- I got an upgraded one -- 275
Crank turned (made new, basically), block cleaned, cylinders honed, valves seated, heads planed, everything pressure tested, camshaft installed, new ring and main bearings -- about 800
New oil pump, water pump, and steering pump with all gaskets -- about 300
New hoses (ALL the engine compartment) -- about 275
New radiator -- 156
Inline thermostat mod -- about 70 dollars
New lifters -- 110
All new fluids, front to back -- maybe 150

I dont know what that adds up to but it is basically a new engine.

The head gasket kit and bolts are about 215 dollars shipped. You can replace them with basic tools in a weekend in your garage, with the engine still in your truck.
