Default 2003 Rear Driveshaft Conversion (Rotoflex to U-Joint)

I purchased the following driveshaft and conversion kit from BPUtah:

Land Range Rover Discovery Genuine Rear Driveshaft Drive Shaft Conversion Kit FRC8387

Their website shows the conversion is only for "94~99 Discovery I and 99~02 Discovery II".

I decided to check other suppliers and their version of the conversion kit. Atlantic British shows the same restriction (i.e., "94~99 Discovery I and 99~02 Discovery II"):

Drive Shaft Conversion Kit For Land Rover Discovery Vehicles

I checked first with BPUtah before purchasing the driveshaft and conversion kit. They confirmed it is will also work for my 2003 Disco.

I would have normally done this installation work myself except that I had just moved into a new house and the garage is packed with boxes. I took the Disco to a local shop. They tried to install the BPUtah kit and called to say this differential spacer is needed on the kit:

Differential Spacer (Part # 539745 ) - Land Rover differential internal from Atlantic British

Just curious if anyone has done the rear driveshaft conversion on a 2003/2004 Disco in the past. Can you comment on the need for the differential spacer or difference in driveshaft length between the 2003/2004 Discos versus Discos of other years please? Thanks in advance of your feedback.

if i remember correctly a 03/4 drive shaft is 3/4' shorter that a 99-02. because the transmission in the 03/04 is longer

Hi, I know this thread is old, but I bought what appears to be the same kit through Atlantic British. It came with Britpart FRC8387 rear propshaft too: https://www.roverparts.com/driveline...e-shafts/9300/

On the AB site, it says its for 99-02, like you mentioned in your post. My kit actually came with that differential spacer you mentioned. Did the spacer solve your problem and were you able to get the shaft in without other issues? I'm planning to take my OEM rear shaft and rubber coupler off to do the project and trying to avoid any surprises. Thanks!

Is this true?

I am the original poster. It was a while ago. Unfortunately, I did not install this part myself as I was in between a move from the States to Canada. I provided the parts to the shop to get this done. I recollect having some sort of email discussion with BPUtah about the missing spacer. They gave me credit. I subsequently ordered the spacer from Atlantic British and passing it on to the shop for installation.

I do know the 4HP24 used in the 2003/2004 is slightly longer than the 4HP22 used in the earlier D2s. The 4HP24 was designed to handle the greater torque from the 4.6 engine. I believe the bell housing and (larger?) torque converter changes is what makes the 4HP24 different.

I just got off the phone with AB and the sales rep said that they made a mistake shipping me the rear drive conversion kit since my disco is an '04. He said it wouldn't fit at all and that they don't stock a kit for the 03-04 - only a replacement shaft - and said that i'd have to stick with the OEM set up (i'll shop around and see if this is true...maybe Britpart has a kit). Good thing is that I didn't take my truck apart and I'm getting a full refund.

I thought it was just upgraded internals (thought I read that the larger torque converter fit the older housing on Ashcroft site) That could explain the super tight fit of T-case in my 01. It has a 4HP24 trans......

Sorry, unfortunately, I am not an expert on the transmissions. Interestingly, these transmissions are also used on the BMWs. Interesting read here, especially post #6:
