Default 2004 D2 Steering gearbox

I'm about to rebuild a steering box for my D2. The one in the truck is no good, I do have a spare box in my shop that is in better shape but i want to refurbish it. I understand there's a seal kit to do the whole unit. Is there anything special I should know about doing this job. Anyone have any links, info, advice. thanks.

I did intend to rebuild mine. But one of the shafts was damaged, something hard went through the gearbox at some point. Repairing the shaft would have been pretty costly so I replaced all the seals, and put it back on the truck until I could get a replacement. It did not last. I ended up buying a new-old-stock unit and have been trouble free since. If you do a search on this I think you'll find that the success rate for a rebuild is pretty low for some reason. It depends on the state of the inner components, I guess.

X2 failed re-seals/re-gasket. I would just throw the used one in.

After failing at it myself, my advice is to take your time and be very meticulous about the reassembly. On mine, a pin that aligns the internals had shifted slightly while I was bolting it back together so I cracked the aluminum backing when I went to torque the bolts.

Many people have successfully resealed their steering pumps so I wouldn't necessarily say don't bother trying.

Default removal

When you guys removed your steering box from the vehicle did you have to undo any of the steering linkage / ball joints for clearance,

what company/manufacturer did you go through? Were the seals&gaskets crappy? I don't wanna buy all the stuff if it aint worth the effort. The unit I have seems to be in good shape, I just don't know how many miles were on the donor truck.

No, just the ball joint from the Pitman arm.

There are quite a few videos on Youtube explaining the rebuild process for reference.

Heres one:
