I really want to run some 235/85 r16 tires, but since the Disco wheels are pretty much all 8" wide, and this tire size is always specified as 7.5" max rim width, I'm wondering if this is a bad idea (it's only 1/2 inch though).

I have read some threads on here where people have run this combo, but wanted to check and see if anyone has done this and what the long-term results are. Also, not sure how this size combo will work aired down off road.

I have considered doing some modified Honda Odyssey steel rims, but would rather stick with my trusty LR alloys as a first resort.

 

I'm on my 4th set of 235's, no issues daily driving it for the past few years or airing down to 12psi when offroad.

 

Good to hear. And have you had trouble getting a tire shop to mount them on 8 inch rims? Discount Tire won't do it but I've found an indy tire shop that says they'll try it.

 

I've never used a chain store, so I can't say.
All of the stores I've ever had mount them are mom m pop shops around town.
None of them have any issue mounting them.

Okay, instead of wondering if 235/85 r16 would be the tire for me, I went ahead and just bought some and had them mounted. I'm coming from a set of Copper Discoverer STT Pro's 285/75 r16. I chose the Toyo Open Country AT III. Mostly I chose this tire because it's light for an E rated tire (44 pounds vs. 59 pounds) and it's an all terrain. This will net me a 15lb reduction per corner over the Coopers. That's a lot. And man, it's a difference I can definitely feel.

Mounted on the 8inch wheel, I don't think it has much of a negative effect at all.

So, I'll cover the bad part first: They look wimpy. Now, this might just be because I'm so used to the look of the 285/75 STT Pro's, but man, I don't know if I'll be able to get used to this.

On the upside, there's the following
1) This thing drives and rides like a dream. Seriously, it's like a completely different vehicle.
2) It actually goes forward and stops. With the bigger tires, it always felt like I was accelerating out of a hole and stopping didn't inspire confidence.
3) Road noise is non-existent. This is largely do to the AT tire not necessarily the size.
4) Bumps and bad roads feel much more tolerable.
5) I was able to take an inch of lift out of it (blocks). Now that I'm back to the standard 2" OME, there's less body roll and better steering of course.
6) This tire size is way cheaper.
7) From inside the vehicle, this tire and size combination are a no brainer.

Now, I haven't tested them off road yet, but I'm sure they'll be good, not worried about that. I just don't know if I can get used to the look. I feel like I neutered my truck.

It's really just vanity, I know. So, I did keep the Coopers and I have a spare set of rims. I'm going to force myself to leave these tires on for a few weeks before I make any final decisions.

What do you all think? Am I just being a whiner about it, or does it look bad?

 

they don't look bad at all. I'm not a pizza cutter fan tho most of my friends with classics run skinnys and love them.

 

I run 235/85R16's on my XD and they look excellent. I'm using the Thunderer M/T and to be honest they're really a good tire. I've done lots of highway & off road driving with them and to me it's the perfect size for a RRC/D1 with a 3inch lift.

 

Okay. You guys are making me feel better. I think it's just my perception because I'm so used to the big, wide MT's. For reference, here's what it looked like before.

 

I think D2's look good with either. I have that size and like the skinny utility look. I also removed my flares as you did which made it even better.
