Default 4.0 vs 4.6

Hi Folks..

Two quick questions..

Does one of these motors have a higher likelihood of blown head gaskets or slipped sleeves over the other?

I'm assuming they are both the aluminum block, is there a feeling on which one overall is going to last longer?

If you were to buy a 2000 vs 2004, with similar adjusted mileage and proper maintenance, is one better than the other overall..

2004 will have the edge, as early model oil pump problems have been fixed by then. The block is essentially the same, the increased displacement was achieved with different connecting rods. Both suffer from Rover overheating, so run a 180F thermostat and an OBDII scanner for temp monitoring.

The early oil pump issues only pertain to a specific vin range of 03's. Old Rover/Buick engines have had an issue with the oil pump gears spread across all years of production.
The 4.6 has a little more power but drops more sleeves and has the same possible head gasket failure.
What would you be using a Disco for, how mechanical are you and have you ever owned a 4 wheeler before.
My money is on a 4.0 for less issues even though it has a little less power then the 4.6.

If I were to need an engine for my 2003, I'd look for a GEMS 4.6 from an early P38 and swap the cam gear and crank sensor mount with the Bosch style. Lots of Land Rover techs see less serious problems with the earlier engines. They can all have head gasket issues.

Good way to go for sure, it was a better engine or if you could find one, a 4.2 was made from better alloys, head less problems and made good horse power.

I'm with Jafir, I'd go with a Gems 4.6, but the CPS mount I wouldn't call an "easy" mod.

Well, the Disco's with the 4.0 were also lighter, so I wonder if performance is really all that different. A 4.6 into a DI would be an interesting mod.

I cannot imagine they'd be that much lighter, the only significant differences are crankshafts, camshafts, pistons, and maybe rods. The longer stroke provided by the crank would probably mean it weighs more, but not much. The block is exactly the same from 4.0 to 4.6. The pistons probably are close in weight.
