Default 4 Low Question

Occasionally (rarely) I will put my D2 into 4L to keep the linkage from sticking. I've noticed that once I'm in 4L and take my foot off the accelerator there is a pretty noticeable lurch. Since I never actually use the 4L I'm not sure if this is normal behavior or indicative of some problem. Everything shifts smoothly in 4H.

Is this something to check out or not?

What are the RPMs and speed when this occurs?
By Lurch do you mean the truck jumps forward or because of the RPMs declines in speed in suddenly and pushes the driver forward?

So I'll keep it around 1500 rpm and 10mph, estimating there when driving in 4L. When I take my foot off the accelerator it is definitely because of the RPM decline, it just feels very abrupt.

If that is the case, I would not worry about it. Sounds like the truck is behaving the correct way. I would be concerned if you are hearing some kind of grinding or popping sound. I have had the same experience with the CDL locked and in manual mode going down steep terrain. When I let off the accelerator, I was pushed forward in the seat because the truck's RPMs suddenly declined to match the gear that had been chosen.

I would suggest dropping into 1st or 2nd when you are using 4 low, I often use manual mode as well to keep the Disco in my chosen gear. But in low range you will get a pretty sudden drop in speed and rpm when you let off the gas

Thanks for the info all. I'll try the manual mode next time!

seems normal to me. or at least normal for your truck and my truck. both my '04's do this. i think the gearing is so low that once you let off the accelerator the engine acts as brake.

edit: come to think of it, my '96 does the same thing when in Low.
