7 point trailer connector
Well I am now A proud owner of my first new used discovery. I just bought a 2003 SE with the tow package. My question is can i buy a 7 pin connector that would plug into the stock plug? And also is the truck prewired for a brake controller or do I need to wire my own? I bought the truck hoping to tow my travel trailer. I noticed in the owners manual it stated NOT to use a weight distribution hitch. Can anyone tell me why? This model does not have the SLS so I'm not sure why not. Also the hitch I have is for sway control also. Will the truck really tow my trailer without any problem without my hitch. My trailer is a 21 foot trail lite crossover total weight wet is about 2900 lbs. Any help would be greatly appreciated I would like to get it wired up soon. Thanks
are you looking for a flat four wire connector? if so, www.roverparts.com has a converter that will plug straight in. Haven't seen any pre-wired trailer brake controls, though....
I work at a RV dealership and run the parts and warranty dept. You would only need a weight distribution hitch ( which you said the manual said to NOT use) if the trailer sagged your Land Rover down with the tongue weight. If the trailer and your vehicle sit farly straight and level with each other when hooked up, you are fine. You do need the sway control due to the length of the trailer and the shorter Land Rover wheel base.
An adapter from your 4 way to a 7 way will work, BUT you will not have a battery charge line or electric brakes. 4 wires wont support all that , go with a 7 way wire set up. Our dealership only charges $30-$60 to wire the correct set up. A very good brake controler runs about $79. If you arent familar with doing the wiring, take it to a RV dealer and let them do it right. Usually runs 15 minutes to and hour.
I just bought my first Land Rover ( a 1998 Disc 1) two days ago. I just asked my shop manager today to wire mine up with a 7 way to pull my sail boat. You can still get an adapter to go from the 7 way back to a 4 flat if you need it. I also have a small 12 ft flat bed trailer that will uses the 4 flat plug. That way I can use any trailer!
I have have Jaguars and MG sportscars for 30 years. Now I can have a British tow car also that I can enter into British car shows as well!
Hope this helps.

Behind the right rear tail light is where you fit the trailer wire harness andit plugs into the tail light harness (you can get one at your LR dealer and they are spendy). However trailer brakes (brake control) I don't believe are pre wired you will have to run that wire your self and insert into your wire harness for your trailer. The other thing, I don't believe is included is the battery charge wire that most 7pin connectors have in it I don't recommend using the charge system on the LR. On my 01 Disco, I just tapped to the correctwires with the a convertor for a 4 flat for my trailer. No Problems. Remember you have amber turn signals so a convertor will have to be wired in if you self install it, the kit already has it.
Now as for as for a weight distributing hitch. First of all, if your tounge weight is less than 700lbs, why do you have a weight distributing hitch? If you were to tow with an S-Blazer, Exploder,Jeep GCor anything in that class because their suspension is a lot lighter weight,it would keep you more firm on the road and less bouncy. The other reason if you have the self adjusting suspension on your LR, you certainly don't want to use a distribution hitch, it will level for you to balance the load and you are not towing that much weight and I don't think your trailer has that much tounge weight anyway. You may want to invest in a sway control for your trailer, but distribution hitch is not necessary.

You will need to buy a converter package to plug into the wiring harness located in your r/r quarter panel, from the you will need to add your brake package.
The best place to buy a conerter would be Atlantic british or Rover Connection, same kit as the dealers just less money.

Thanks guys I have already ordered the 4 pin flat kit from roverparts and I also will oreder the seven pin connector with the brake control harness. I had the hitch from my Nissan frontier that I traded for the disco. My disco does not have the self leveling suspension but I think you might be right about the low tongue weight. The frontier did not have very stiff springs but I can already tell the disco is for real. Again thank you and I really luv this forum!!!!
