Default '96 and '98 Disco I engine

My18 yr oldrecently damaged the hood, grille, bumper, lights, etc.on her 98 Disco I. I purchased a 96 Disco I for $800 that has a blown engine but good body parts. Just the body parts alone that I needed were $1,500 plus! The parts car hasn't arrived yet but I was thinking that the 96-99 Disco's all have the same engine and maybe the same transmission? Are all the engine, tranny, etc interchangable? I also found a '98 with a cracked head that supposedly that's the only thing wrong. If the '96 head is good, will it fit? Any estimate of the cost to do this?

96-99 engines are the same, known as 4.0L

95 had different ignition system and is known as 3.9L

get a second answer though, because I am relatively new to rovers

Yes, the '98 is a drop in engine swap.
Exact same engine/trans/t-case/ECU/body/axles.....

This is correct, pre 1996 Discoveries with the V8 used a distribitor, post 1996 V8 Discoveries use a electronic distibitorless ignition.

Spike555, thank you for the information. Hopefully I'll now have spare parts for a while. I'm no mechanic but I have been able to tinker with the '98 myself to fix a few things. The '02 Disco II Kalahari that my wife drives is a little more intiminating but it has a 100k warranty.
