Default '97 Disco I stuck in drive!!

The truck will roll, the key will turn but it will not come out of DRIVE. I don't exactly know what happened because my son was driving. He may have turned it off in gear. I would hate (big time) to go to the dealer. Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated.

One of two things are wrong.

The easy one is the shift handle the nut inside of the top cap (it just pops off, the cap to get to the nut)
is loose.

Now the bad one, the parking pin in the transmission has broken.
The only to fix that one is to pull the trans apart.

On a large incline the parking pin will not hold the weight of the Disco with out the
parking brake.
Over time it will ware out.

Landzu:
I spoke to my mechanic who said to jump the small connector on the brake light switch. No change.
Then I pried off the top capon the shuifterand there was a clip that had come off. I reattched that, and she started right up!! Thanks
(The A/C actually seems colder now; I wonder if they are connected??)

That works if the brake light don't work.
