'97 series I CDL into '02 series II
So i have an '97 transmission laying around and am pondering installing it on my '02. I know that when offroading it makes a huge difference and this is why i want to install it since my '02 only has high and low right now. My question is it just a simple unbolt the transfer case from the '97 and '02 along with the levers and just swap them and everything lines up? then just need to do some wiring to illuminate the dash light and thats it? or is it more involved than that? I just dont want to take it off the road to do the swap and find out that nothing lines up when i go to do the swap. I've looked around for a tutorial but havent found anything very good so if you know of one please point me in the right direction. Any help is appreciated Thanks!

Unless you are getting a good deal go with an 03/04 transfer case or at least the front output housing to save money. If you are getting a good deal swap the whole thing out. You may need to make a bracket of sorts for a high/low switch if your 97 txfr case does not have a spot for it. If your 02 is like mine the two wires for the CDL light in the dash and computer will already be there in the wiring harness above the txfr case. Just swap over your output flanges and you'll be good. A little bit of work, but not impossible by any means. I would imagine a 97 will have the same difference in tooth count on the low gear as I ran into in the above link. You can pull the front housings off and look if you feel so inclined, but I would mentally prepare for swapping the whole thing.

Thanks for the responses and its seems like its not a great idea. I just thought that it would be a simple swap because i have a '97 transmission for free but ill have to look for another new transfer case because i really dont want the hassle of making parts and taking the chance of something breaking.

Novice speaking there... its pretty easy to change the front nose of the transfer and that will get you what you want.
BrandonS just so you know in the future the same wiring harnesses were used on all the models it was the cheapest way to build them. Now that would change from d I to D II but all D II' s are going to be the same and so on.
