99 DII transmission???
I aquired a 99 DII dirt cheap and the guy i got it from said that he was on a trail and the tranny just stopped working. Truck will not go i D or in R. I went yesterday and started looking at the vehicle and i put it into 4H (i think) and put it into drive and got under the truck and noticed that the drive shafts were not spinning. Both the front and rear driveshafts were there. I tried to put the trk into 4L and the shifter gets real real sloppy. It feels like the shifter might be broke but it will disengage the transfer case because the light on the dash that looks like two gears with a line through it lights up and turns off when i put it in the right lower position. Are these shifters supposed to be an h pattern kind of like a four speed??? I dont know what to check next. Today I am going to try and get a code reader and get any codes in the ECU and i will update later but in the mean time does anybody have an idea of what i can check next??
The H pattern is on the models with a CDL, which is D1s and later D2s. Some early D2s have a spud on the transfer case that can be turned with a wrench to invoke locked CDL. If you have a blown diff, normally that drive shaft turns, and the wheels don't.
These trannys are electronic, and there is a switch on the side called the XYZ switch. It tells the electronics where you put the shifter, so they can work the valve solenoids. The XYZ can get full of mud. Can remove, cleanout, re-seal. Can also test contacts with a meter.
The factory shop manual is called the RAVE, links below, don't pick up a wrench without it. HAs electrical manual and circuit diagram as well.

I started to tare into it today I haven't touched the tyranny yet but the transfer case seemed really sloppy so I tore apart the transfer case shifter housing and it is a disco 1 shifter I think. I am going to pull it out and clean it up. I also finally was able to get the codes pulled. It is throwing codes: p-1884, p-0741, and p-0722
from the RAVE workshop manual, page 616; both the 741 and 722 indicate a problem with the torque converter slipping. 1884 is a generic there-is-trouble-in-the-tranny code. Sounds like a pre-owned transmission may be in your future.

Fluid looks bright red but he said he took it to a shop before parking it last year. they might have changed the fluid already. If i change the fluid and the filter dont i have to have the enigine running to check level? What about when filling it and i wonder if the tranny shop did that. I finally got the transfer case shift lever out but nothing looks to wrong but i dont really know what they are supposed to look like. I think it is a D1 shifter due to the CDL locking mechanism. Does anybody have a pic of this mechanisim/ linkage so that i can see what it looks like. I can not get the tranny to engage in either high or low. The CDL actuating mechanism/linkage works fine. Could it be that the car just happen to roll just right and the transfer case will not engage because the shifting mechanism inside the transfer case is just in the perfect spot??
A 1999 DII transfer case shifter should only move forward and backwards in a straight line with 3 stopping points. High, Neutral & Low. If you can move it left and right at all there has been a CDL linkage installed by the previous owner. The 1999 DII came with a CDL enabled Transfercase, but Land Rover didn't deem it nessecery on account of the all the electronic 4x4 equipment they had installed in them & decided to save about 4 dollars per unit and not give us the linkage to use the CDL in the transfercase.

So after a late night i checked the level in the tranny with the truck running and go did not feel fluid level in the transmission. I bought some fluid and tried to fill but the pump i used was a piece. So i have to go and get another pump today and then try it again. So the torque converter code... Does anybody know if this is possible: What if the transmission shop filled the tranny up while it wasent running. If the vehicle wasnt run alot after that happened could it be that i just need to fill up the transmission with enough fluid and then the transmission might work, does that LUCAS NO SLIP work well?
first get the level where is should be running before worrying about adding stuff to it. if you haven't bought a pump yet buy a small one or two gallon garden/bug sprayer, fill it up, pump it up and take the spray tip off, works great.
