Sorry to put two posts out this morning. On Sunday I had the DII out near a lake we frequent- it has many steep and winding roads that surround it. On it particular has a steep grade followed by a quick jog to the right. As a topped the hill and prepared to descend, I was moving at about 20 MPH. Nearing the bottom, my ABS briefly engaged! Not good. Not good at all. I have noticed this as well approaching a stop sign and stopping quickly on a dry road and a sunny day.

I have read on this and other forums that LRs- disco, classics, etc can have "over reactive" ABS systems. Is there a way to disengage it in these situations?

 

Your ABS was doing what it is supposed to be doing, giving you the best stopping power based on the traction of each tire. If that was the case, what's the problem or am I reading your post wrong?

 

No Mike- I don't know if I have a problem or not. That I guess is the problem. I had a GMC last year (which I traded for my DII) that had a recalled speed sensor, causing the ABS to engage when it was not supposed to- in line at the drive through- and also on a steep hill. Until my DII, I have not had a vehicle do this. Kind of a strange feeling to get used to.

 

What year is your D2?
If you have CDL, you can turn off the ABS, most 99's, 2000's and some 2001's have this ability.

Yea I had the same problem on a hill with loose rock.

When your sitting on the hill trying to control your decent and your ABS kicks in and leaves you uncontrollably click click clickin yer way down it can get un nerving not to mention potentially deadly.

I will be hooking up my CDL soon to ditch this problem, but in the mean time give that hill decent control a go. I switched it on and crawled the hill so slowly that I had no worry at all......bit scary trusting it for my first time, but kinda cool at the same time.

Most other trucks on this planet disengage the ABS in 4lo and some even disconnect the Airbags as well.

 

Oh yea.... if you don't know already about the center diff lock (CDL) do a search for it on this site. When I found this info out I damn near jumped for joy!

Land rover left the CDL in and just left out the shift leaver for it.

 

You could always pull the fuse to the ABS when you off road and then put it back when you hit blacktop again.
The ABS on my DI was acting up, couldnt stop, even on dry roads, almost rear ended a couple of people, pulled the fuse under the hood and now it stops just fine.

 

Guys, even with a retro fitted CDL on an early D2 , and the wire to the SLABS ECU is not cut,When itlights up the ABS , TC , and HDC lights, it ONLY turns of the TC, NOT the ABS. The ABS, EBD and HDC still function, but at degraded performance levels.

This is why I cannot understand those who dont cut the wire, you loose the ability to have the CDL and TC, which offers much more traction options.
