I have recently had the ABS,HDC,TC lights come on in my 00 DiscoII(112,000miles). I went to LR who said I need a new ABS module($1800.00) and for my service engine light I need a new air filter box/housing($150.00) because mine is letting air in and throwing O2 sensor codes.
Has anyone here changed the ABS module themselves? I am thinking it looks pretty easy. Disconnect the battery, drain brake fluid, take out ABS module, put in the new one, refill brake fulid and connect battery. Is it this simple and are there any special tools needed? Any advice on making the job easier?

Never done it as neither of my two vehicles have ABS.. but I understand it is not the replacement of the sensor that is the problem, it is the resetting of the computer, otherwise it will still show error codes.

Also, have to say, the prices seem very expensive. Have you tried any other brake specialist company for a second opinion at least.

Not sure either how a leaking air filter box is causing any problems, if you are talking about where the air filter itself, and the box it sits in, then not sure how it can make any difference as your engine is sucking air in through the filter, it is not pressurised. Thus if you had a hold it would not suck more air in, just a risk depending on where the hole is of sucking in dirt. My own filter air box actually has a hole designed in it to let water and dirt out.

It might be worth contacting some of the parts suppliers, and see how much the parts are, and then challenge the garage on the prices it is quoting.

 

Hi, I have replaced 2 of the sensors in my DISCOII 99. They cost about $150 plus labor in Australia. It is just a sensor that needs replacing. There are 4 of them 1 per wheel. The car will run ok without them, unless you plan to go off road.

 

Is the dealer sure it is the ABS module and not just one of the sensors?

The sensors have a habit of working themselves loose from the mounts, which will send an error code. You might want to look at where the sensors are mounted, remove them with a set of pliers and reseat them. If it really is the ABS module, you will still need someone to reset the codes after the replacement.

I have had an intermittent problem with one of my sensors in the past, as it would not seat properly in the housing. What was happening was that everytime I turned the wheel sharply, the lead was pulling on the sensor. This was due to one of the plastic zip-strip restraints used to hold the sensor near the brake being broken during a swivel ball replacement.
