Default AC squeaks badly...

96' Disco I V8 4.0
140something k miles...

My engine started squeaking pretty badly last weekend. By today, it's worsened. It's definantly coming from the AC compressor. I don't have the bank to purchase new so my question is:

Can I remove the clutch assembly from the AC compressor and just let the pulley "free wheel" until I get some dough for new compressor?

If so, where could I get the removal proceedures or could you guys just tell me how to do it?

Thanks

Daryl

If you are sure its the AC compressor,,, I do not think you can get the
compressor to free wheel.

When you turn the AC on does the sound stop?
Or does it just change?
Does it sound like a super charger spinning up?
When you spray WD40 on the belt or compressor what happens?

If you turn the A/C off the compressor will not engage and it will just "free wheel".
With the A/C on spray a penatrant/lube onto the back side of the compressor pully and lube the bearings and see if that helps.
Are yousure its the A/C?

I'm pretty sure it's the AC. There isn't any noise coming from the alt. or the fan or anywhere else.

When I engage the AC the squeaking doesn't quit but it does change pitch. In fact, when I increase throttle, the squeaking is hardly audible.

I just figured that the clutch was approaching 'lock-down' and I wanted to get it outta there before I blow a belt! Any more recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Ok do this, be very careful, take a short piece of hose and with the truck running and the A/C on stick on end against the side of the A/C compressor and the other end to your ear, then do it again to the alternator.

What condition is the belt in? If it is worn it will sqeal with the extra drag of the A/C.

I fa ll else fails you could try running without AC by re-routing drive belt. Looking at the manual it gives a option of running belt without aircon. To do this though you will have to do 2 things.
1. Change position of tensioner.(Easily done if you have a look at where it mounts. there are 2 options)
2. Check with parts supplier if shorter belt is required as manual does not clarify this point.

In the mean time you could have ac out for repair or replacement. Hope this helps.
