Default Advice on which engine is better?

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and Land Rover generally. I have been interested in Rovers for a while and am looking to purchase a gently used Rover Discovery. I have recently moved to Alaska. I will not be using the Rover for daily commuting. It will be a free-time/weekend vehicle.

Could I get some opinions on engines? Should I look for a 2003 or 2004 Discovery with the 4.6L? What are the pros and cons of the up to 2002 4.0L?

I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi,
Not an expert opinion, but I have both. The 4.6L has noticably more power than the 4.0L. There are some oil pump issues with some of the 2003, Do a search for the VIN#'s. Aside from the above there are not many differences. If I would be in the market, I would buy a 2004 4.6L right now. Although, someday I will get my hands on a 2004 Diesel (TD5)!
Hope this helps a little...

They are the exact same engine, the 4.0 & 4.6, but the 4.6 has more horse power, you7 go from 200 to 216.
The 2004 is by far the superior truck of the 3 you are looking at.

That is a hell of a deal. Have you seen it yet, check and find out what comes with it.

I agree with Mike, what you will need for the swap are the engine and the ECU for the 4.6.

If you can't get the ECU, don't sweat it, the 4.0 ECU handles the 4.6 well.
