Here are the figures... We have a 2015 Range Rover Sport, which I love, all spec'd out with about $45K left on the loan. It's an awesome truck(?), tough, 100% aluminum construction, so rust won't be an issue long-term, it's fast, not bad on gas for a LR (~22-23 mpg), and, well... it's really nice.

Problem... I feel like it's TOO nice. I'm afraid to take it to Home Depot, I'm afraid to soil the white leather door pulls, I'm afraid of scratching the pretty black wheels. It's also expensive and there's a bunch of stuff I think I'd rather do with the remaining $45K if I'm convinced this is the way to go.

There are plenty of Discos out there, nice ones, for around the $7K mark. And after having the 2002 for as long as we have, and working on it and really diving into the bowels of the truck, I just really love it. It's tough, reliable-ish (every car has things about them), and in all honesty, I think the look is just as nice as the RRS, just in the opposite, more vintage direction. It's becoming desirable aesthetically in the same way Defenders have been.

Anyway, the thought of no more car payment sounds nice, and the economies of scale involved with maintaining two of the same vehicle is also a nice thought. I mean. The nanocom becomes much cheaper amortized among two vehicles instead of just one, for instance. We can easily afford the RRS, but I guess I'm just wondering if I want to when the Disco would probably make me just as happy. Reliability may be less, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've been eyeing a few sweet UK spec RRS' in my area. What's been putting me off is the high mileage on them.
But i can understand them being TOO nice. If some one dings my Disco 2 door... meh... I could care less. If someone dings my wife's X5 door.. I'm ready to rumble. lol

As long as you are OK to work on your D2 or have some budget set for the occasional trip to the mechanic shop. I still don't think you will be anywhere close to a car payment and insurance cost. I know that was a big factor for me.

For me D2's are at the bottom of their price range right now. I only see good ones going up in price from here on out so the sooner you find a good one the better.

one other thing to consider (and for anyone else considering this kind of thing).
Collision insurance: on a $45k car is expensive. And the bank will insist.
If you have a $5k car you can just not bother. Work out your break even point. Mine was about three years. Took the gamble, and every year after the three years is money on my pocket.
Just have to accept that if you smash it up, it’s smashed up.

 

So far it's going well! I've resigned myself that daily driven disco ownership requires three cars for two people. Even the new boy still has issues I have to deal with, like tomorrow, for example, I need to replace a leaking throttle body heater. That being said, I haven't sold the RRS yet because since I picked up the Disco it's been at the LR dealer getting all sorts of warranty work done... new air compressor to replace the one that went bad, new ride height sensors, new vacuum hose that split causing an evap code, etc. No car is without its faults. I love the RRS and I love the Discos. If the RRS was free, I'd probably keep it around, but all in all, the D2 satisfies in a way few cars, especially at this price range, do.

 

For all its faults, a well maintained Disco is a good choice. Just accept the fact that you'll have to re-waterproof the body, do "reliability" mods like 180F and spend some $ on regular maintenance. That's it. I would love to get a new(er) Land Rover or a Land Cruiser, but the prices bite.

 

Can you even get 45k for the RRS?? I don't know anything about it's value.

 

Afraid not...I’ve been lowering it bit by bit. Currently at $39k. Cars are so good at depreciating.
