Recently changed mine with a used switch for a S&M issue. In retrospect wish I'd simply tried rotating prior to replacement.

For your situation simple check may be as suggested loosen bolts & rotate. If that doesn't work remove and rotate through travel several times and try it again. Contacts inside get dirty.

One check is what you already did, faulty indication of gear selection.

Can we please refer to the transmission fault indicators as M&S lights and not an S&M issue?

Probably not unless many consider it offensive.

From D2 Workshop Manual:
'Sport' and 'manual' lights flash alternately.
Economy, sport and manual modes
Limp home mode is selected and vehicle performance is greatly reduced. The sport and manual warning lamps flash.
Sport/Manual warning lamp circuit fault

How do you get the electrical connection apart without using a hammer and/or wire cutters?

Squeeze the connector while pulling the plug, they lock together.

The wire connection for the "XYZ" switch on the transmission.

**edit**
Also, is there a way to test this switch at all to see if it is indeed dead before I spend the money on a replacement?
