You're supposed to check the level with the engine/gearbox at ambient temperature.

How To Check And Refill Transmission Fluid On Discovery 2 And Range Rovers

or page 10-18 in the workshop manual.

The quickest way I have found is to jack up the vehicle onto axle stands underneath front and rear axles so the wheels are 2 inches clear of a level garage floor. Start the engine and with your foot on the footbrake move the auto stick through all the range of gears a couple of times and then return it to P park. Undo the filler/level plug and top up the Dexron 3 asap until it overflows slightly. Re-insert the plug and run through the gear range again with your foot on the footbrake then return to P park and recheck the ATF level again and top up if necessary. Job done. Time taken about 30-40 minutes.
