I usually recommend to stay away from that one... much higher risk of problem with that route. The linkage/shifter option is just a simple manual operation. I'm a big fan of low-risk with these trucks.

HAHA. Thanks for all the help guys. How difficult of a job are we looking at to change out that t-case/center diff? Is it just disconnecting the drive shafts and all that?

Uh...yeah.

These trucks were built with working on them in the field in mind.

LOL!! The old Series perhaps with just a portable toolbox with basics. The LR3 and newer I couldn't see working on with anything less than the most technologically advanced repair shop. The Discos....somewhere in between.

Granted, there has been nothing I have not been able to repair on mine in my driveway yet.

Spike, are you sure that it is a direct bolt it? I have called around to some mechanics in my area and they said that they would need more parts than just the t-case. I was planning on doing it myself, but if they could do it for real cheap, i might as well. Has anyone actually done this mod to a 2002/3 or anyone have a write up?

A DI is a DI is a DI and a DII is a DII is a DII.

The '03-'04 trans is different than the earlier model DII's but the t-case is the same.

Unless you are talking to Rover techs they know nothing of which they speak.

All Rovers are built in the same factory to be sold all over the world with every engine combo from a 4 cyl to a TD5 to a V8 and to keep it simple and the assembly line moving they all use the same driveline components.
Why use a different t-case is all you are doing is changing the style of the headlights?
The trans is different because the '03-'04's have the bigger (more power) engine so a bigger fluid pump was needed for the trans. which made the trans longer, but the t-case is the same.

Keep looking and keep asking, knowledge is power.

I agreed with Spike on just buying the whole thing as one, you'll prob save quite a bit if you can find one.

If you can't find an 04 T-case with CDL linkage included, make sure you buy a 99-00 DII T-case. The "nipple" is the key to CDL, if it doesnt have that, you don't have CDL.

If you do the whole project on your own, you'll save quite a bit.
How do I know when they stopped putting the "nipple" on the TC? Mine doesn't have the CLD on the shifter

I've owned 2 02 D2's and they both had CDL nipples..........

Slapped in an 04 linkage and SLABS unit and called it a day.

99 I have also has the CDL nipple, I just installed an 04 SLABS unit and I have the 04 linkage as well. Just gotta find the time to install it.

Knowing what year Discovery you have would help. But, like what has already been mention in this topic a few times...go under your truck and feel on top of the front housing of the transfer case for the nipple. It will be located behind where the front shaft bolts up, about four inches back, more to the inboard side of the housing...if it is there...you can't miss it.

Brian.
