Axle Seals
Oh, so at 40K and 4 years looks like both rear axle seals are shot. Make sure you top up your rear diff oil on a regular basis and if it seems to be taking more or you see a pile of shavings (like 2") on the magnetic drain plug, your seals are probably shot too. It's a good thing I was swapping diffs this week or this would have been unnoticed and untreated.
Axle seals when warn out do not leave metal on your drain plug, that is metal from your ring and pinon and diff that you are seeing.
Yes check your fluid often cause Rover diffs are weak and can gernade themselves easily. I run an 85W/140 gear oil for the extra protection.
By the way, if your hub seals leak, you will see oil on the backing plate of your brakes. This seal can not be replaced and would require a whole new hub assembly.

Yeah, finding that out. We're going to look at making them rebuildable because $650 each is utterly insane for seals and bearings. Yeah, I know the shavings are from metal
, there was far more slop than there should have been. We've fixed that, but now if we can't make these rebuildable then I'll have to fork out for another $1300, which is crazy. Know anywhere cheaper to get them? (that's CAD but they're fairly close these days)

Here is the other option, http://www.roverlandparts.com/index....TS&Category=97
for good guaranteed used hubs.

Thanks, that looks like a viable option. Just end up having it on their hoist for an extra few days since they don't work weekends. Which also sadly means I won't be able to get my speakers in, even though they're arriving tomorrow. Unless I get them to re-assemble using the old hubs and just change them myself next week.
We had them out while doing the Detroit installation, and the ends are covered in oil grime, didn't get past the disc protector though. The oil was also low in the rear diff but fine in the front.
So, looks like you have some hubs coming up in the future.
Did you install HD axles with your Detroit, stock axles will shear causing the detroit to fail.
If you get any noises or unnecessary unlocks from your new Detroit, lets talk and I will tell you how to cure it.

I haven't put in HD axles yet but they're on the list. I'm not doing any severe use in the next while though and tires are only 32". Just new expensive things keep coming up... as they always seem to. Thanks for the offer, I'll be sure to ask if I have anything strange happen.
