Default Bad Axle Seal or Hub Bearing?

Yippee! Leaking from somewhere new... Big surprise there.
Look's like I'll be pulling something apart soon.

Looks like the CV joint or the gaiter of the lower steering swivel joint leaking. I've got the same mess on my D2. I'm waiting to see what develops.

Might be a stupid question...
But am I correct assuming it's leaking gear oil out of the axles? Should I consider topping off my diff?

I have some extra 85w140 from when I did the diffs and t-case last.

I would check the diff on a regular basis until you repair your leak, it's easy enough to do, but you probably won't lose much based on the photo. I tiny leak can look like a lot of fluid by the time it spreads out. If you start having drips, that's a different story.

That is gear oil. Coming from the axle seal. Doubt you'll ever notice a fluid level drop, unless you go for months and months. You will allow more junk to get in there. Not that bad of a job. You don't even have to separate hub from shaft, just yank as a unit. And yes buy a good seal, not cheapo. I make it a practice to buy those in pairs. I have on occasion f'ed up a brand new one on install
