Not sure if he can get those plugs and wires in Australia.

Get the best plug wires you can find down there and you can use any (brand)plugs you want, personally I like Iridium plugs.
The ones in my truck right now are Autolite Iridiums.

As for the timing becoming "off".
As the engine wears things loosen up and then things are no longer in "time", the cam gears get slack in them (the distribitor runs off the cam shaft) and that can affect timing.
The timing chain gets loose from wear, timing off...
Lifters wear, timing off...
Even worn or gapped wrong spark plugs can put the timing off. (the bigger the gap the longer it takes to spark thus the timing will be off, not by much but add engine wear and it all adds up)
It is nothing more than a machine and when machines wear things become off.
So what I am trying to say is that the timing needs to be reset every time you do a tune up just to keep things in time.
How well your engine runs, how efficent it is, how much power it has, everything is based on ignition timing.
Thats why newer cars have electronic ignition, the computer keeps the ignition timing precisly where it needs to be at all times under all engine loads for optimum power, MPG and overall driveability.

sounds fair enough - so I'll buy a timing light.

I can get Magnacore here but I suspect they are over $200 - I think the US supplier at $80 does ship Intl. though.

I can get Bosche plugs but not sure on the plus 4s - I'll have to have a hunt around.

What is the best way to test the coil to spark curcuitry? Don't want to go to all this trouble and find the coil is bad or Dizzy needs some work.

I like the eyes open from the start approach.

I do not know how to test a coil that is "working".
Or a "dizzy" as you guys call it.

dizzy - distributor

So a coil will either work or not? thought maybe it might function less than optimum before it wore out.

Coils can loose power overtime, so while it "works" it might not be putting out the required 50,000 volts but only 30,000 volts kinda thing.

With only 109,000 miles on your truck that may or may not be part of your problem.
Depending on how hot it is there will determan how long it lasts.
