Default Bad water pump = blown engine??

Can a defective water pump cause the engine to fail on a 2000 DII?

If it leads to overheating.
I suppose a catastrophic failure could severely damage the block, but I've seen some nasty water pump failures and never seen that happen.
The temp gauge, assuming it was functioning, would warn you ahead of time though.

Default DII water pump failure

That makes sense. The water pump failing by itself could not blow the motor but if the engine overheated it could.

Sure it can, especially if you are not paying attention to your truck and how it is driving.
Why do you ask and how do you know it is blown?

Default DII water pump

I actually have a customer who has a claim against them. The owner of the vehicle had a water pump installed and now they are claiming the water pump was defective and it caused the engine to "blow up".
I understand it could cause overheating but doesn't it make sense that if they continued to drive the vehicle while it was overheated and they ignored or didn't notice the warning lights or gauge that some fault lies with the driver?

Yes, if they continued to drive it with it overheating then it is the drivers fault.
Does not matter what kind of car it is.
They are called idiot lights for a reason.

When it overheats too much... the bad water pump could definitely cause the blow up.. My friend has experienced this and it was really scary..
