Default Belt squeeling

Ok so my belt is squealing intermittinly at higher rpms. Just thought I'd ask if theres anything else I could look for before having to drop $150 to replace it. The disco is a 98 with 70,000 on it. I assume it should be replaced at this mileage anyway.

On a nother note, does anyone know as well if the transmission pan can be removed without having to remove that crossmember just below it?

Thanks

The serpentine belt can be bought for about $40, easy to install after you inspect the tensioner and pulleys also, they can also cause or add to the noise.

I actually just replaced the belt and now it started. It's an intermittent squealing at high revs. So I guess its time for a tensioner assembly?

The tensioner will shorten the life of your new belt if it is "hanging up" and not providing the proper tension. Did you check the water pump when you had the belt off? It's possible the noise you are hearing is the bearing on its way out in the snout of the water pump casting. You can turn it with the belt off-- feeling for any roughness and checking for wobble or free play in it. You really want to catch this before it fails, as when they go the impeller on the back of the water pump can severly damage the timing case housing.

In addition, check the viscous fan clutch unit while you are in there.

I have the tensioner in stock for $203.00

Water pumps are $145.00

Ya I actually just replaced the water pump, fan, fan clutch about 3 weeks ago. I ordered a new tensioner, we'll see how it goes. Thanks
