If you do a quick forum or Google search for “Discovery 2 center console removal” a few guides will show up. It’s not hard to do, I’ve had mine apart 2 or 3 times. Like I said, you don’t need to remove the whole thing, you just need to get it loose. In particular you don’t need to to disconnect the parking break, which I find to be the most difficult part. A few notes though: 1) If memory serves, no “rewiring” is needed, just unplug the old outlet and the wires should plug in to the new one as they are all standard spade connectors. Mind the polarity by making sure the black wire is plugged in to the negative terminal. 2) The shifter head just pulls right off- DO NOT twist it or you will break the mechanism. It takes some effort but will suddenly “let go.” If you aren’t careful you will smack your face when it does (learn from my pain!).

Edit: I was able to find the guide I used, it’s a guide for installing a center diff lock but the first step to doing that is to remove the center console:

One other thing I didn’t see mentioned is that the lighter socket in the D2 is a slightly different dimension. I’ve heard it referred to as a “cigar” lighter, versus a cigarette lighter. It may be that it is slightly deeper, which means the adapter you tried simply doesn’t reach all the way to the bottom of the socket. I replaced the one in my truck years ago with something I bought at NAPA, and I’ve never had a problem with any charger adapter since then, whereas I did before. That does still require removing the console and wiring in something new.
