Default Better to buy a rebuilt transmission or a good used one?

I changed my fluid and transmission filter and found a large piece of what looked to be a bearing race in the bottom of the pan. Explains the whine I'm getting when decelerating. So now I'm in the market for replacement transmission, despite the fact that mine doesn't slip or shift bad at all. It just whines. There is a local guy that has a tranny from a 2000 Disco that was rebuilt in 2010, and he has paper work to prove the work was done. I talked to Paul Grant and he quoted me a very good price for a low-ish mileage transmission so I'm unsure what to do here. Wouldn't a quality rebuilt transmission be the way to go, or should I stick with Paul's quality used transmissions?

The rebuild is only as good as the guy who did it. Paul Grant has an excellent reputation among all the forms for being a standup guy.

Hope this helps

Used.

Transmission shops are the biggest scam artists that can legally operate. Unless the transmission tech was my best friend I wouldn't trust his work.

And a good used tranny should last 100000+ miles easy if you take care of it.

Thanks for the advice. Paul is indeed a great dude, so looks like I will be getting one from him. So never trust a rebuild. Got it.

x3 if I can't rebuild it myself, I can assume that it is only, as good as the word, of the person that rebuilt it. from experience, i have only had 1 of 7 rebuilt trannies last 1/2 as long as its original journey. that 1, bearly beat 1/2.
