Birds under the hood?
I'm the proud new owner of a 2001 Discovery with approx. 71k miles. I noticed when I'm accelerating or moving at a constant speed there is an intermitten sound that I can only describe as birds chirping. At first I thought the belt needed to be replaced, but upon further investigation the belt looked fine. Could it be the suspension? Another symptom to consider...when I let off the accelerator there is a loud popping noise coming from the front of the passenger side. Are these related and what do I need to do to fix these problems? Thanks for any suggestions.

Front driveshaft is going bad, replace or repair it, now.
This is the noise you have, right?

Wow, that's exactly the sound! So is it difficult to fix/replace this part?
Don't drive your truck, that shaft could snap and take the trans with it, take the front shaft out and take it to driveline shop and have it rebuilt with greasable joints and a new centering ball kit, way cheaper than a trans.
If it is the drive shaft's double cardon u-joints failing, they are correct, stop driving it this morning.
How mechanical are you. As an 01, you could remove the front drive shaft, engage the t/case and drive on the rear shaft alone, this will allow you to verify if the front shaft was the problem and give you time to have someone rebuild it while still being able to drive the truck.

And when that happens, this can happen:
In case you were wondering, that's an enormous hole in the side of my transmission.
No, it didn't happen to me, I bought it cheap because this happened.
