In a bit of a panic
I just got my 2000 Disco II about a month ago and have slowly been working my way through all of the checks. Oil changed air filter plugs wires checking out suspension components etc but tonight I got in and after I took off the (S) and (M) lights came on along with a flashing light on the gear selector. Pulled over shut it down, restarted with no light then they popped back on with a CEL. Was only about a hundred feet from home so I limped it back and parked it.
I really need to know what is going on here. Any help would be appreciated.

Codes would help, if you have a reader or can rent/borrow one. When the M&S ligts come on, and the CEL does not (as in your first problem) that is an indication of the transmission computer detecting 9 volts or less. This can be a bad battery, bad conections at battery terminals, the ground wire for the battery (follow to wbere it bonds to chassis in several spots), or the tranny computer power wiring (tranny computer under seat).

A great code reader if you have an android phone (for the torque app) is the ELM327 bluetooth connector. It's like $20 and a great investment.
Without codes the amount of help people can offer is limited when you are dealing with sensors and electronics.

unfortunately I have an iphone. The parts shops are all closed today so I'm going to start by checking the grounds and battery voltage. Everything I've found (granted with out a code for confirmation) is the gear selector switch, which apparently can be cleaned out and resealed.

Like Savannah said, clean the battery clamps and terminals. Pretty common problem is the cable being loose and corrosion buildup at the connections. I've twisted the cables back and forth cleaning the corrosion off and the M&S flashing went away. Could be something more but check the simple (and cheap) stuff first. Low battery voltage will also set off the check engine light.
Wanted to update...I spent some time poking around under the hood checking fuses and such, checked to see if anything had changed and apparently my pass. side door now unlocks with the remote (it previously had not) and the lights did not come on at all. No flashing (M) or (S) or D. don't know what went on
This happens to my car when my occasionally in rain or after a car wash. The code that pulls is related to the crankshaft position sensor. Generally the lights flash for about 10 minutes and then everything is fine and codes are gone. Tackling this issue once it warms up outside.
