Bleed Brakes on Disco 2
I just replaced my shuttle valve to get rid of the 3 Amigos. I needed to bleed the brakes. After bleeding the brakes the pedal was spongy. I saw a number of websites that all said you need to use the $400 Hawkeye Tool to open the ABS Valves to do a brake bleed. I don't have the tool nor did I want to invest $400 for a one time project.
Thanks to a number of contributors to this board, I discovered that you can open the ABS Valves by putting the truck in low range and accelerating to 20 mph with Hill Descent Mode activated. Park the vehicle and bleed the brakes with the iignition on; starting from the right rear working to the left front. Give it a test drive if the brakes are spongy repeat the procedure.
You can do the back brakes with the wheels on. The fronts can be done with the wheels on but it might be easier with the wheels off.
Helpful Hint, your bleeder screws on the calipers are likely to be stuck and rusty. Before you strip them out with an open ended wrench, spray them with PC Blaster and use a six point socket to break them loose. Put some brake fluid in a cup or bottle, attach a hose to the bleeder screw. Open the screw with the hose on the nipple. Have a friend pump the brakes, observe the fluid in the cup, after you stop seeing bubbles or foam, tell your helper to hold the brake to the floor. While the brakes are being held tighten the bleeder screw.
