Default brake fluid mythbuster

I have a 97 Discovery and my parts supplier tells me that the ONLY brake fluid to use is this special brand Castrol GT/LMA Dot 4 brake fluid. The sales guy tells me that other brands don't have the protection that Castrol has and other brands would break down the seals quicker. Is this a myth or are there other brands that will work just as well. Are there other brands that works just as good as long as the brake fluid is a Dot 4?

Thanks.

All DOT 4 brake fluids are pretty much made to the same standards set by the manufactures, with the exception of of a few out there that make a pure synthetic brake fluid like Vavolines synthetic brake fluid.
The word for you parts guy is "BUSTED".

Hi Disco Mike,

A quick note about the synthetic brake fluid. In your opinion, do you think that synthetic Dot 4 brake fluid be good enough without messing up the seals...as the sales person claims would happen.

thanks.

I have been running it for nearly 4 years because of the heat generated by my DBA rotors and kevlar pads, works great with no brake fade,

Atlantic British Ltd. has said the same thing about using only the Castrol brake fluid.

Hi folks. This may sounds like a dumb question, but I've been (mistakenly) putting DOT 3 brake fluid in my '96 Disco I for a while. Is it okay to suck out what I can, bleed and put in DOT 4 ? Will they mix alright, or do I need to flush the whole system ?
Thanks,
