brake lights 123
i have a 02 disco2 and the abs, hdc, tc, lights have all come on. i have read a couple of post's about there being many things that could cause this. the light's came on after i was driving awhile with no use of the brakes. i have new brakes on the front taken care of by the dealer. i hear VERY little brake squel from the pads, do not think that i get any type of excessive brake dust, and have a long throw in the pedal before the brakes work. i think it is an abs sensor gone bad, and yes i need to schedule an appointment with the dealer to have the codes read. i was wondering if there is any way to test the abs sensor without the dealer's help, and would have no problem working on it myself, i just have never had to do abs on any other car. tia
No way to really test the sensors. Many times when the light comes on, if it is a sensor, it si not always cause it has failed. sometimes they get jarred out of adjustment or dirty, this will throw a light also.
As for the soft brakes, don't know how many miles you have on the truck, but you should consider doing a full brake bleed, will make a hugh difference.
As for the dealer, have him read the codes, write them down, then ask the dealer to let you go drive it around town for awhile, they may not even come back on again, if they don't , your set, if they do then go for the repair. Mine come on twice a year and I just get them reset and go.

Quattro, The ABS warning light indicates a serious problem with one of your vehicles safety systems. Have it checked out by a competent repair facility with the proper diagnostic equipment. Clearing codes with out fixing the problem is not worth you or your families life. Save money by changing your own oil, etc.
Just my 2 cents...

i already do my own mantinence and am not scared of some light's on in the dash. i just want to alleviate the problem because the lights tend to be a little annoying. i am a single male and would prefer to not hit anyone else, or endanger the life of their children. i also have owned audi's for ever so maybe i am jaded about the light thing. nuf said, anybody able to get the program needed to clear the codes, or have a source for it? Thank you all in advance for the help.
I think Bait is overly concerned about your warning lights. You are not going to endanger anyones life, worse case, you are just not going to have proper ABS functions.
Hell, I can't wait to get off the road just so I can turn off the ABS and traction control, they are such a pain in the ***.
Bait and I disagree on checking codes and resetting the lights. Bait is coming from the dealer/shop mentality, test it, find the problem and repair/replace the parts, which can be good but does not mean the problem has been fixed. Too many times, a shop will test, maybe find a wheel sensor code and replace the sensor, when in fact it could have been dirty, out of adjustment or a heat/dust related problem.
So my direction is to have the codes read, cleared and drive to see if they come back, on a greater % of the time, the lights won't return and if they do, it is usually from after market pads, too much brake dust and or heat that triggers the lights.
Do what you feel is best for you and let us know what happens.

Hey Disco Mike,
I had my front and rear brakes replaced. Then, I went to Auto Zone and had the codes read. It had a wheel sensor warning. You have never steered me in the wrong direction......so, what do I do now? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Depending on the year truck, sometimes all you have to do is either clean and or reseat the sensor. I would do that first and then have the code checked and cleared by a shop that has a scanner capable of clearing the code. Then go drive it, you may find it was a fault that was caused by the brake pads or rotor, not the sensor that picked it up. If that is the case, you probably won't have the light come on again, if it does, well then you will need to replace it.
Hope this helps.

I have a 2000 Disco II...how do I clean the sensor (actually...how do I tell my husband how to clean the sensor)

The other thought would be to go have the codes read and cleared by a shop that has eith a test book or autologic then go drive it for a couple of days and see if the light comes on again, quite often it won't cause it was a one time problem that was not caused by parts but more by heat and or dirty rotors and pads,( Brake Dust).

Most shops will charge $50-$120 just to clear codes. Do what you feel is best...
