Default brakes

I have a 2003 Land Rover Discovery with about 38000 mile. Our brakes began to squeek so I believe it is need of new pads. I am going on an1100 mile round trip this week and I do not want to get down to the rotors because I heard they cannot be turned. The squeek has been going for about a month. Is 38000 about right for new pads? Also, is it hard to independently check the wear on the front or rear pads? Finally, what is normal price for parts and labor? I am waiting on a quote from an independent shop right now.

Thanks in advance for your help on this.

Are you at all mechanical, if so, the brakes are easy to change, so save your self some money.
Let me know what you are quoted and especially the brand of brake pads the shop is planning on using then lets talk.

Default RE: brakes

Mike,
Thanks for your help. I got my quote, it is approx 250 for front and 250 for rear. These are OEM pads and he said it would knock about 200 (50 each pad) off if he used aftermarket pads. He said that in the past, his experience has been that aftermarket pads still squeal after being installed. Years ago, my father helped me change the pads on my Jeep but I barely remember doing it. I am not a mechanical genious, but do feel I could change the pads. I just do not have the time with the upcoming trip. What do you think of the cost? Is there a quick way to check the pads for wear myself to know if both front and back are needed?

Thanks,
John
