Default Brakes - prelude questions

2003 LR Discovery

I will be doing a full write up on changing all of the brakes. Doing some investigations I have come up with some questions.

First, the hubs need to come off to change the rotors and pads. Are the bearings sealed units or can I grease them up when re-installing?

I thought they may be just standard bearings I could replace so I called down to the local parts store and they quoted me $950 per wheel. Thats a tad bit on the expensive side so I am guessing they are sealed units.

Anyone have experience with this and have an idea with the bearings?

The write up has been done already:

On a DII the bearing are in a sealed hub unit and cost $450. You do not need to replace the hubs (or take them off for that matter) unless they are bad of course.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The link you shared doesn't contain a writeup on brakes. I appreciate there are several out on the web. I used to be a technical writer and it was my job to do complete removal and replacement procedures.

Many of the procedures I have found are lacking in many respects. One, being that I should replace and lube the bearings when I do this job. So, being I was going to do this whole job on Wednesday I was just going to do a writeup to describe what I found for this website here.

Thank you for the info on the bearing.

Thanks Josh,

I am on a Mac and your site must be using a strange plugin because firefox cannot find it. I have the rave manual, and while nice doesnt have women in bikini's in it for all of the R&R procedure.

Thanks again,
- Joe

The wheel bearings are sealed inside the hub, run them until the hub goes bad then replace the whole hub.
Doing all four wheels on a DII takes like 30 min including rotors.

Every bolt on my truck was rusted solid. What should have been an easy job took me 9 hours and 3 trips to the auto parts place for blow torches and snapped tools. It looks like my 03 had the original rear discs on it they were paper thin and while someone had changed the pads (evident by the ease of removal) the carriage section was basically welded to the axle.

I used an impact wrench, 3' and 5' breaker bar, and a gallon of wd40 and other penetrating oil.

Lots of fun but now its done 4 dimple/slotted EBC rotors and green pads. Stops like a small car now.
