Burning oil
Has anyone had any problem with their Discovery's burning oil? We have a 2003 Discovery with about 22000 miles on it and I have to top the oil off every 400 or 500 miles. Prior to this, we had a 2000 Discovery and did not have any problems. We got the truck from my in-laws and the dealer told them that it was "normal" for them to burn oil. I have not addressed it with the dealer as I wanted to get other owners input first. We are under warranty until December and if there is an issue, I would like to get it resolved. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
John

RE: Burning oil
Burning or leaking, it is not normal and should be addressed by the dealer.
How many miles to the quart of oil are you looking at?
You will probably have to start tracking your oil useage very exactly, actually you may want to ask your dealer to write up a work order regarding your concer and ask him if he has a special form and process he needs to follow.By that what I mean is start a sheet showing your mileage, date and quarts added. Always check it when it is cold, first thing of a morning and only add full quarts, so start with your oil level on the top line of the dip stick and do not add partial quarts, it is too easy for the dealer to question your usage if you try and guess about the amount added in partial units.
Once you have tracked your mileage for a couple of months then take your paper work to the dealer and have him write up a work order on your truck for oil consumption.
You may find with talk with your dealer that he may want to check, track and add the oil so that he can comply with Rovers policy, hey what ever it takes.
Good luck and let us know what happens.
