Is this ok? we bought it new with the bmw v* 4.4 and the check engine oil light went on at 11,000 miles and the oil was down 4.5 quarts. at the 15,000 service it is down 1.5 quarts. this seems like a lot to me. We had a 2001 BMW X5 4.4 (same motor) with none of this oil loss/burn business. Thanks for any help Mark the dealer says it is ok

 

you lost that much oil total over the 11k and 15k or between oil changes?

 

we lost 4.5 quarts between zero and 11,000miles and then filled it up. the oil check at 15,000 miles was down 1.5 quarts. seems like a lot of oil burn

 

1.5 qrts @ 4,000 miles is not too bad, is any leaking or is it all burning, and are they mostly freeway highway miles or city driving. how many miles do you go between oil changes? What oil are you using? also is it synt. or dino?

 

If its still under warranty, take it back to the dealer, let them fix and worry about it.

 

u might not be burning the oil at all.. check the drain plug make sure it still has that cooper or silver o ring on it, make sure the oil filter is still hand tight... check the small stuff first.
