Default Buying a TD5 in Africa — Advice?

Hey fellows!

I'm moving to Uganda with my family of four next year, but in just two weeks I'm headed over for a ten day trip to get some things done and, most importantly, buy us a family Land Rover. I own a 2004 V8 Disco 2 here in the States, love it and have had it for almost six years, putting hundreds of hours of bloody work into it and almost as many driving it—why not do it all over again in Africa! Since the TD5 is available, and gas prices are much higher over there, I've got some TD5's I want to look at.

Anyway, I'm building an inspection list for when I check out these Disco's (and bringing my Hawkeye of course), and I've read quite a bit on the particular failings of the TD5, but nevertheless I've never owned one, so I don't know very well what to look out for compared to the V8. I've got a good friend over there who happens to be a mechanic and he's going to come along with me to check out these vehicles, but I want to be as ready as possible.

Any advice for buying a TD5?

Check the sunroofs. They all leak on the TD5's.

Kidding, I know zero point zero about TD5 Discos, but I'm strangely jealous of your predicament.

You may find more help in the UK and Aussie sites where the TD5 experience is more prevalent. Good luck on your adventure in Uganda!

Haha, I am sure they have some fine examples over there.

Haha yes, those blasted sunroofs. Thank goodness most of the options in Uganda are the basic models and have no sunroofs. A little sad to miss that fun feature, but in a heavily rainy environment and being in the bush with very limited access to parts like new sunroof gaskets, the last thing I’d want is rain dumping in.

Great idea on checking the UK and Aussie forums acg, I’m headed over!
