At idle you should see 13.4v and up at the battery. I swapped out the alternator on my 97 XD several weeks ago. Original in it was only doing 12.9-13.2v tops. Got a used 120amp unit out of a P38 & it now does 13.4-14.1 no problem. I’d certainly meter it & make sure all the cables are clean.

Ok I got a chance to inspect and clean condensor and radiator and both checked out ok visually. Waterpump has no wiggle to it and hd viscous clutch/fan also seemed to be operating correctly. So cooling system checks out, no leaks and zero coolant loss. However if I hit the driver side casing on a/c compressor while a/c is running with ir I get a reading of 220+ degrees. I’ve never checked the temp of running a/c compressor before but that seems excessive? Is it possible for the compressor to create that much heat and still put out cold air thru the interior vents?

Mine was 162 when I checked. If internet speculation is correct it’s possible the A/C is putting an extra load on the engine because it is broken, not lubed or whatever.

Just cleaned and wire brushed both terminals and checked the grounds.

I am going to grab a P38, found one at a yard here. Going to call on Friday.

My engine running hot, esp under ac load. Had a look at aux fan this morning, does not appear to be working. Anybody know the relays and or fuses to check? Happy 4th!

Under the hood with the radiator and fan symbol I believe.

The alternator I got out of a ‘99 Range Rover did not fit, so I need to do my homework I guess!

It is weird. I am looking and I do see 2 types searching online. Maybe some have an option that requires a different bracket. I don’t know. Fortunately, I could return it.

It looked like this:

looks like it is 100amp. Glad it didn’t fit!

99 P38 is a cross year some were GEMS based engines and some were Bosch based. You’ll need a Bosch based engine unit for it to be a direct fit into a D2.

How much would you take for the 99 GEMS unit that didn’t fit? Things aren’t light so no clue on shipping & handling.

99 4.0/4.6L GEMS P38 alternators are 120amp Marelli’s while a GEMS 4.0 D1 alternator is just 100amps. All Bosch 99-02 P38 alternators are 150amp Bosch units.

99-02 D2 were 130amp Bosch & 03-04 D2’s were 120amp Valeo units.
