Default A/C turning off

1996 Disco When I turn the a/c on it is running ok and then it suddenly cuts off. and the a/c light goes off. The fan also stops blowing for a few sec. and then starts blowing again without the a/c. I can then turn the a/c on again and it will work for a period of time.

Sounds like a possible relay. Does it happen on all fan speeds, does the compressor stay on when the fans go off?

It seems to happen more when the fan is on high. The compreser turns off along with the fan and then the fan starts again in a few sec without the compresser.

You could have a resistor burning out, that would explain the high speed fan quiting.
What does it take to restart the compressor?

All I have to do is push the a/c button off and on again and it starts right up.

You might want to confirm my thought but I think you are loosing your resistor pack that control your fan speeds.

Hmm mine almost does the same thing. But mine only does it when running the fan on high for long periods of time, and only cuts off for a second, before I even have time to fiddle with the fan speed switch it comes back on, compressor running and all. Kind of figured it was a resistor dying somewhere, or a loose/bad connection on the fan switch? Not happened enough to bother me yet, and the Dallas summer has been mild so far, but I'm sure that will change in July.......

Most likely the fan resistor like Mike said. Iexperienced a Toyota several years ago and it did a similar thing, intermittent on high speed fan, or just didn't work, turned out to be the fan resistor. I'm not sure where it is yet on the Disco? I've had other more important things to work on, onmy Disco, so I've not researched where the resistor is yet? Most likely in the dash behind the glove box/center console somewhere?

I'm wondering if the resistor pack is expensive? Or is that a stupid question LOL!
