Another option would be to buy wider tires. D2 alloys are 8" wide IIRC and you're running 235/85/16's which are fairly narrow. Moving up to a 265/75/16 or 285/75/16 would let your sidewalls stick out past your wheels and take the brunt of the rock rash. But then again you may just end up blowing out sidewalls left and right.

And one last thing to consider. The D1 and D2 alloy wheels hold a bead really well. Steel wheels often won't hold a bead as well as the stock alloy. So if you like driving on the sides of your wheels you may find yourself losing beads with the steel wheels.

16" Army style wheels and tyres, no good on the highways for noise but should last better than your alloy wheels. Bigger taller tires IMO and watch out for the rocks, they bite you and your wallet.

Yeah steel has some advantages, but I agree the double lip on a stock LR Alloy will keep that tire on the bead for sure.

I've got a set of Ebay all metal D2/P38 Lug nuts and I'm very pleased with them. No more loose cap or fighting with sockets anymore!! Best 35.00 I've spent.

It was! Watch out for the curbs...

Those steelies Abran has are the P38a wheels I was talking about earlier. They're about as close to the Camel Trophy wheel as you're going to find for a DII.

The P38 steel wheels dont look as good as the steel wheels used on Camel Trophy rigs. Ive decided to track down RRC114560MUW wheels instead. Saw them mounted on a Defender, painted white and they do look good so. Thanks for the useful info and part numbers.

The wheels you mention were never used on defenders. You are thinking of wolfs, which look like these but have the opening for the drive member.

I don't remember the bolt pattern off my head, but I have a set of steel rims from Summit Racing. I believe they were some older Chevy/GM pattern.
