CDL kit Discussion [Center Locking Differential]
#32
X2 on verifying CDL presents and not assuming anything based on the model year and build date. I had an early '01 that came off the line in 2000. I sourced a D1 shifter without confirming, opened the center console, and no nipple. Had to add the front output assembly. After some research on the VIN by Will Tillery, it had come with CDL, but was swapped out during warranty period by LR for the PO with a non-CDL transfer case.

Also make sure to use RTV. The first time I installed my CDL shifter, I didn't really do a good job of sealing all the way around. It was noisy. And hot air came up. Later, I had to replace my CDL detection switch. So the second time I reinstalled the shifter plate I made sure to put a good coat of RTV all the way around. Very quiet and no air. In fact it is even quieter than before I did my CDL install.

Try it and see. I have tons of parts to sell. It will wind up the drivetrain eventually damaging, at the very least, a differential. Frankly, I thing the fact that most people didn't use or even understand the point of a locking center differential is one of the major reasons why Land Rover abandoned it.

Ok update and an issue. I just did a road test well field test behind the shop. The CDL is working and I get the dash light. I can hear it engague and disengauge. The issue is I can not get low range. History. When I got tbe truck the range shifter was moving freely. Turned out the cable was dis connected at the range selecter on the case. Now everything is connec
ted and I can not move the selector into low range while rolling slowly and in "N". I assume there is some sort of lock out to prevent range change while in gear or park. Could this be the issue?

In park, when you're trying to get it to shift into low, tap the throttle to raise the RPM a bit, apply pressure on the xcase lever, and let off the throttle. It should slot right in. Mine did that.
But then mine worked using the neutral method too. Strange.
