Chrome Rings 4.6
Have no idea if originals were chrome, but think that I have head that they were. I have installed chrome rings in various engines before and found that it takes "forever" for them to seat properly, due to fact that the chrome is so hard. Other times I have installed non chrome rings, finding them seating well and relatively fast. The chrome ones last quite a lot longer, under normal use, than the non chrome ones. Not sure what I prefer, everything considered. Get opinions from a very experienced engine rebuilder, machinist, for they usually know way more than your average joe, the driving guy!
You are correct. Chrome rings last longer but can be difficult to seat in. Most of the time when using cast iron liners, you will find chrome rings.
Change oil brands if the rings do not want to seat, that sometimes will help.
Thanks,
